Modern advertising men try to justify what they do by telling us of the advantage of advertising. Thus, it is said that advertising 31 the price of goods because it increases the number that are sold. In fact, products could often be sold more 32 if there were not wasteful competition between companies. This results in 33 advertisements, the 34 of which is passed on to the public. A magazine has pointed out that headache pills without a brand name can be sold very cheaply, but the same pills, advertised at a cost of half a million pounds a year, cost five times as much. Secondly, it is suggested that advertising gives 35 to the customer. It is, of course, useful to know what is on at the local cinema, the date of a sale or even that certain types of goods are 36 . But most advertising does more than inform, and much is 37 . You would be very wrong to believe that all the 38 shown on television are genuine. Thus, in a polish advertisement, black glass was used instead of wood to give a 39 effect; and in a cat’s food advertisement, fresh meat was used because the cat refused to eat the tinned product. That “whiter than white” shirt in a washing powder ad, is 40 to be light blue. The truth is that the emotions to which advertisers appeal are not good ones; fear, greed, wanting to be better than one’s neighbors. Advertising agencies spend a lot of time doing research into ways of manipulating us.
